I Can Cope Class Overview 2003
Class I - April 16 or September 10
Learning about Cancer and Cancer Treatment An oncology nurse will
give an overview of cancer treatments including surgery, chemotherapy
and radiation therapy and how to deal with common side effects.
Class 2 - April 23 or September 17
Keeping Well in Mind and Body: Nutrition and Exercise A dietitian
will discuss the importance of good nutrition and review special
concerns for cancer patients. An exercise specialist will explain
how exercise, energy conservation and relaxation techniques can
decrease fatigue and improve the body and spirit.
Class 3 - April 30 or September 24
Understanding Feelings and Relationships. A social worker and
oncology nurse will discuss how to deal with common emotional
concerns surrounding a cancer diagnosis, how to communicate feelings
with others, including your health care team and how to adapt
to changes brought about by cancer and its treatment. Tools to
help manage stress and solve problems will be discussed.
Class 4 - May 7 or October 1
Discovering Resources Speakers from Mercy hospitals and community
organizations will explain what resources are available in the
hospital and the community to assist persons with cancer and their
families.
Class 5 - May 14 or October 8 (Dates subject to
change)
Using Complementary Therapies. A nurse or physician will give
an overview of selected complementary therapies, discuss how to
evaluate these therapies and where to obtain more information.
Basic information about the use of herbs, nutritional supplements
and vitamins will be reviewed.
